Memories of Life in Rock County
I lived in a house on “the edge of town”. It was along the Greenbelt and the creek ran close by. So much of my youth was spent playing at the creek, much like stories of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer’s adventures from Mark Twain, using debris and wood scraps to build stuff.
I would play for hours on end around the creek with my friends. When we’d get rain, the creek would swell and gush. It was pretty dangerous, but back in those days, we would play out for hours on our own without a care.
I remember the big hill that rose up toward the east and the farmer that owned the property had some big, fierce dogs. We’d sometimes play on his property, but if those dogs came around, we’d run and jump back over the fence so fast!
Eventually, they built the Youth Sports Complex up on the hill. In my high school years I would referee youth football there and summer sports camps. It was amazing to see the changing landscape in that part of the city, and it came fast.
Women in My Life
My Grandma Arlene was a big inspiration in my life. She was ahead of her time and received a college education, even though she was a stay-at-home mom with her kids. She was a life-long learner. She and Grandpa were married 66 years. They both passed away within a few weeks of each other in 2016. Grandma Arlene was the best! I really miss her a lot.
