Fresh food produced by local families and prepared by professional chefs will highlight the new Rock County Historical Society (RCHS) Sunday Dinner event, set for September 18 from 4-7 p.m. at the RCHS campus.

From live music by Bathtub Mothers to silent and live auctions, attendees will be entertained while feasting on a four-course, family style dinner.  Just a few of the meal’s highlights include appetizers, corn on the cob, beef tenderloin, ham, and homemade dessert with fresh ice cream.

This new, annual farm to table dinner brings together Rock County’s agriculture community and the general public. Proceeds from the event will support the needs of Rock County’s food and agricultural education organizations. This year, the Society is partnering with ECHO and Janesville Craig FFA as its 2016 food pantry and youth education partners.

“Sunday Dinner helps to focus on a great community need: hunger,” said Mike Reuter, RCHS Executive Director.  “By sharing the food heritage of Rock County and providing local food, we all can taste and appreciate the healthy food that is around us, while raising money to support the missions of Janesville Craig FFA, ECHO and RCHS.”

ECHO Executive Director Karen Lisser said she’s grateful the organization is a part of this first Sunday Dinner. “ECHO’s portion of the proceeds will help ensure that low-income residents of the Janesville area have access to healthy, nutritious food and prevent homelessness by assisting with rental assistance,” explained Lisser.

Another Sunday Dinner partner, Janesville Craig FFA, is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

“Janesville Craig FFA plans to use the funds from this event to financially support members’ attendance at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October, 2016,” said Diane Runde, agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Janesville Craig.

Each family or individual who attends the event will receive a family cookbook containing the Sunday Dinner recipe, along with other local meals, that represent the food heritage of Rock County.

Tickets are $40 per adult and $15 for children under 10 years of age and can be purchased online at www.rchs.us. This is an outdoor event that will be held rain or shine.

The Society is working with more than a dozen farm families, food businesses, chefs and food-based nonprofits to help stem the food needs of Rock County, while honoring the rich food heritage of the past.
